If you are busy with a project that is sure to generate a large amount of waste, you are going to want to rent a roll-off dumpster. Dumpsters come in various sizes, so how do you know which one you need for your project? If you are doing a minor spring cleaning or remodeling one room in your house, a 3-cubic-yard Clutter Buster will probably do the trick. However, if you are busy with a larger project like a demolition job,  multi-room renovation, or cleaning out several years’ worth of hoarded junk, you may need something bigger. It is not really something you can play by ear, though. You need to have an accurate idea of which dumpster you will need before you start. Here is a brief guide on how to choose the correct dumpster size. You will need to work out your requirements based on the following three factors.

Type of Debris

One of the first questions we will ask you when you come to us for a dumpster rental is what type of junk you will be throwing away. Are you working with miscellaneous household junk or heavy construction debris? Do you have large pieces of furniture to get rid of, or just smaller bits and pieces? This will help us determine what size dumpster you will need. Generally, it’s more a question of volume than of weight. Big items, such as old furniture, cabinets, or big chunks of carpet or drywall, simply take up more space and will require a bigger dumpster. In some cases, like old brick, tile, and concrete, weight tends to be the limiting factor. These materials are considerably more dense, and the weight limits are lower.

Total Volume

Dumpsters are sized by volume, measured in cubic yards. The general rule of thumb is that one cubic yard is the equivalent of 5 or 6 13-gallon garbage bags. Based on your description of what type and quantity of junk you are tossing out, we will estimate the amount of space you will need and then make a recommendation concerning dumpster size.

Delivery Location

After considering the previous two factors, we might recommend that you rent a 12-cubic-yard dumpster. However, that is not going to make a difference if you only have 10 cubic yards of space to fit the dumpster in. You will need to think about the space where you plan to keep the dumpster. It might be necessary to bring you a smaller dumpster, which can then be replaced as it fills up, until the project is completed.
